The Drone Wars
There has been a shift in warfare that is currently revolutionizing the air force. This shift is the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones. These drones used to be strictly for surveillance and collecting intelligence; however, today the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) and CIA strap bombs and laser-guided missiles to these planes. These weapon-clad drones are operated by men and women sitting behind a computer screen, oftentimes in the United States. It sounds a lot like a video game, but the fatal outcomes are all too real.

Valentine's Day
A Day of Love...And Bitterness
According to insideadaytoremember.com, 52% of men propose on this day, but 50 % of women dump their boyfriends if they don't give them anything on Valentines' Day. With these statistics in mind, I think it is safe to say that for some, this holiday is full of warm fuzzy feelings and ultimate happiness. But to others, this holiday only brings bitterness and might as well be officially named "Singles Awareness Day."

Opposing Viewpoints: Spring Semester vs. Fall Semester
After completing my freshman year at Messiah College, I realized what I like about college and what I completely loath. Not that Messiah has given me any reasons to hate college -- because I absolutely love college -- but there has been some debate (at least in my mind) over which semester is better; fall or spring. To this question, I must answer fall, for several reasons.

Opposing Viewpoints: Spring Semester vs. Fall Semester
While fall is my favorite season, it is not my favored semester. As a first-year transfer student here at Messiah College, I spent the fall semester trying to figure out how things worked around here. In the beginning I knew no one, I didn't know where anything was, and Sakai completely confused me. I would search the mass of faces between Boyer and Eisenhower for someone recognizable, feeling a sense of disconcerting disconnectedness.

President Phipps on Sustainability
What makes a group great? A great leader, of course! I think one of the best blessings that our campus has been given is an administration that really supports and listens to our student body. From town hall meetings and visits to student forums, to the reading of comment cards in Lottie, to President Kim Phipps' Open Door days, our voices are definitely heard. Any previous marveling that I have done in the spirit of sustainability at Messiah College and the accomplishments that we have seen on campus would be nothing without the support of the grounds crew, facility services, administration, and countless others on campus.

Too Good to be True?
College costs a lot, and President Barack Obama agrees. On January 24, Obama delivered the final State of the Union of his first term; Naturally he tried to appeal to one of the largest groups that supported him in 2008 -- our generation.

February is the Season for Love
Taking Action to Help those in Need
Consistently loving is, to put into a popular Messiah phrase, "a service-learning" of sorts. Stripping away the glamour of receiving, participating in the act of giving demands that we search ourselves for our true motivation and give from a place where we expect nothing back. February is a month rich in reminding us to appreciate the love in our lives, but I hope that, in addition to that, this month inspires us to give of ourselves tangibly - actively give love.

Be a Recycling Champ
Students Need to Actively Help the Environment
We literally have recycling bins everywhere on campus, yet I feel nothing but utter frustration every time I look in the trash. Now, I understand that not all of us are vigilantes in the war against landfills; however clearly labeled trash cans next to clearly labeled recycling cans should not be filled with "trash" that could be recycled. Last time I checked, most college students have the ability to read, so I'm still pretty confused as to why specific items like foam constantly end up in the garbage.

Change: Adjusting to the New Norm
The changes in life that aren't of our own choosing are especially difficult. Adjusting to changes can be tough and we often want things to be different or long for the way things were. I have heard it said that in order to cope with undesired change it is necessary to define a new normal.

Routines: Monotonous but Necessary
January is a return to all things routine. It's a time to get "back into the swing of things," "back to the grind" and "back to the routine." None of those phrases have especially positive connotations associated with them.
It is important to remember, however, that routine plays a very important role for all people, especially students. Routine, in my view, has two redeeming qualities.

Eroding Civil Liberties
In the United States, we live in one of the freest societies in human history. However, freedom faces threats every single day which oppose the God-given rights of every individual. These enemies of freedom come in many different forms, such as weapons of destruction aiming to disrupt democratic governments and reduce them to totalitarian governments.

Let’s Talk about the Victims
In light of the Penn State sexual assault scandal, our focus needs to shift toward victims
We, as children of God, need to be courageous in our efforts to counteract the effects of sexual violence. As a campus we need to be willing to fight for victims. Our discussions regarding sexual assault should focus not only on proper reporting but on the proper support for the survivors.

Black Friday: To shop or not to shop
Once I was old enough to experience Black Friday for myself, I realized that there is a lot more to it than just running around Target to get the first flat screen. It's about getting that perfect gift and seeing the smile on my mom's face when she opens it Christmas morning.

A Time to be Creative
What's more exciting than making something for someone else? There is little that is more satisfying than being able to look a gift recipient in they eye and say, "I made it all on my own."
