In a thrilling and valiant defensive performance, the Messiah College women's soccer team held Gettysburg College scoreless in a double overtime battle on Wednesday, September 24. Although the Falcons were unable to score a goal (the game ended in a 0-0 tie), Messiah kept its unbeaten streak alive. The Falcons (7-0-2), who were ranked as No. 1 in the nation among Division III schools in this week's NSCAA/Adidas Top 25 poll, have outscored their opponents 42 goals to four in an exciting 2008 season so far.
Unanimously chosen as the preseason favorite by the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation to win the national championship title, the Falcons appear strong both offensively and defensively, and ready to contend. The team, coming off a stellar 23-1 season and an appearance in last season's national championship game, looks to win the school's second title in four years.
This Messiah squad utilizes star players at nearly every position on the field. Senior Brindley Beckwith is arguably the top goalkeeper in the conference and a big contributor to Messiah's success. The Falcons have three all-conference first team players (Kacie Klynstra, Katlyn Musser, and Erin Hench) and two all-conference second team players (Rachel Horning and Amanda Naeher). The coaching unit is strong; Head Coach Scott Frey captured last season's Coach of the Year award.
Messiah looks to continue its assault on the rest of the league this Saturday, in the second of a three-game road streak, this time playing Washington & Lee University. The Washington & Lee Generals (4-2) are coming off of an 11-0 drumming of Hollins University on September 23. They are a talented team that has played in the NCAA Division III tournament four of the past six seasons. With this match-up, there is no doubt about it: Saturday's game will be hard-fought and intense.
