The four photovoltaic arrays will be used to train Messiah College students in preparation for humanitarian projects overseas with the Collaboratory for Strategic Partnerships and Applied Research. The pavilion will also help educate more than 7,500 elementary school students who visit the on-campus Oakes Museum each year.
To increase the educational impact of the pavilion, students installed two types of solar panels- one feeds into batteries and provides power even during cloudy days, and the other feeds directly from the panel to Frey. The pavilion itself is constructed from recycled and regionally manufactured materials.
The pavilion is named in honor of the late Clifford L. Jones, an adjunct professor of politics at Messiah and a founding member of the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation.
