Lacrosse season is here again and the Falcons are raring to go! Indoor practice is long gone and the Women's Lacrosse team has started their season strong. The girls had their season opener way back on March 5 against McDaniel. And while they were defeated 13-7, Coach Greer remained optimistic about the outlook for the season. "We have great individual talent, but now we just need to learn to put all the pieces together." Those pieces fell together not long after those comments when the team gave Coach Greer the first win of the season and of her career by topping the Spartans of York, here in Grantham.
Since then, the team has played to a 3-3 record. Two of those losses have come against well established, highly ranked opponents, however. The highlight of the season would have to have been when the Falcons knocked off the Dickinson Red Devils, who were ranked in the top 20 at the time of their defeat. That defeat most likely eliminated the Red Devils from an at large bid to the National tournament.
The team this year has a wide variety of players on the roster. There is a good batch of newcomers and veterans that provide a potent mix of speed and power. Senior captain, Kirstyn Wheeler is the heart and soul of the Falcon defense. "She is a great leader in the back and plays the 'gutsy' D that I love to see," says Coach Greer. The team is also awaiting the return of Bri Brennan, who is another key component of the Falcon defense.
Known for her "high to low" shot, senior Jess Van Hook has a reach unlike most other players in the league. "Her [shot] has become one that we all know and love," says Coach Greer. The team is hoping that shot will put many points on the board for them, this season. Freshman Kara Geiman has become an impact player, as well. According to Coach, she loves a challenge and steps up her game especially when it really counts. And goalie Jen Venter has had two quality games in front of the net, in which she has posted stellar save percentages. She set a high standard for herself when she stopped 68% of the shots she faced in the season opener.
Those players, along with the rest of the team have trained hard for this season and it looks as though Coach Greer has built a solid team for the future. When asked about the expectations for the rest of the season, Coach responded by saying, "We have tangible goals as a team... not so much expectations for this season...which is very different. Every team we play will be our best competition. Every game is going to be a good game for us and so we will be prepared for each game, taking one at a time."
