The Writing Center Wants You!

Issue date: 4/2/08 Section: Opinion
When I found out I'd been accepted as a tutor at the Writing Center, my heart practically did a Julie Andrews mountaintop-twirl dance number. My excitement, however, may not spring from the reasons you suspect. Certainly I enjoy anything that grants me an excuse to thumb through my MLA handbook. However, I can sum up my real reason for getting excited about working at the Center in one word: You. I, along with the other nine tutors at the Center, am here to help and encourage you.
Perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm sure someone out there wonders what that "Writing Center" is I speak of. To quote Bernie Mac, let me break it down like a fraction for you. Located in Hoffman-the building situated between Murray Library and Eisenhower Circle-the Writing Center provides Messiah College students a place to work on improving their writing proficiency. From English essays to Biology lab reports, Writing Center tutors offer one-on-one sessions during which we provide personal attention to your writing to help you become a better writer. We work with you to identify strengths and weaknesses in your writing and help you navigate the choppy seas of the writing process from brainstorming to perfecting your final drafts.
With a little information about what we are, here's some about what we are not. First, Writing Center tutors are not personal editors. While we won't correct your paper for you, we will offer suggestions to clarify your thesis, strengthen your arguments, and improve your paper's organization. We are also not grading psychics. Just because we compliment your work or agree with your points does not mean we know what grade your professors will give you. Coming to us will not ensure you an A, but it will hopefully help you get closer to higher level writing. Finally, we're not perfect: we know a lot, but not everything, about good writing. We will help you as much as we can, and it is always our aim to devote all our talents to the improvement of your writing.
