And Now, A Word from SAB Regarding Concerts

Issue date: 4/2/08 Section: Entertainment
As you all know, this year our Spring and Easter breaks were combined to form one mega-break, which resulted in extensive time on beaches and/or doing homework on your family room couch. The downside of this is that we have about five more weeks of classes. Fortunately, SAB has put together some concerts with a variety of styles. On Saturday, we had Christian worship band Keith and Kristyn Getty in Brubaker. The Getty's hail from Ireland, and you may be surprised at how familiar some of their songs are. (Does your church sing "In Christ Alone" much? Yeah, written by the Getty's.) Sadly, our Friday night show with Anais Mitchell opening for Over the Rhine had to be postponed for May 6th due to an illness in the band. This week, however, we're bringing Robert Randolph & the Family Band, a multicultural funk and soul group that has opened for Eric Clapton and the Dave Matthews Band. These guys are known for their fun and lively stage shows, with rhythm and dance being integral parts of the performance. It promises to be an energetic, one-of-a-kind show that you won't want to miss. In May, rock band The National will be hitting our humble stage here in Grantham as well.
Now, I know what you're thinking, because I think the same way. You want to know why you should go see a band you haven't heard of, and why SAB doesn't bring the bands you recommend. My response to the former is that you could consider taking five minutes to YouTube these guys and see what you think, and then beg a measly $5 off your parents, friends, waiter, etc. to go see a live show that you don't even have to find parking for. Regarding the latter, SAB wants you to know that the booking process for bands is very extensive, and we take the student input very seriously. John Eskate, Concert Executive, holds monthly meetings with the Concert Committee (which any of you can be a part of) in order to determine what acts to line up for the coming semester. This year our aim was for musical diversity, hence we brought some indie, rock, Christian, worship, funk, and folk music (Feist, The National, mewithoutYou, the Getty's, RRFB, and Over the Rhine). If you aren't happy with the music you hear and see on campus, do something about it. Go to the Committee meetings and respond to our annual online survey.
