Oil Leak by the Yellow Breeches Under Control

Yesterday afternoon, a mass email was sent out informing the Messiah College community that "a small amount of diesel oil had been washed by the rain from a construction vehicle into the Yellow Breeches Creek."  The email went on to assure readers that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) would be at the campus that afternoon to "assess any environmental impact, ensure that all appropriate procedures were followed, and provide instruction and guidance for future safety and preventative measures on the site." And So It Begins...

On January 3rd, in the state of Iowa, the Plymouth Rock of the primary season was found; the Iowa Caucus.  Republicans met and cast ballots simply to help their candidate gain some serious momentum going into the January 10th primary in New Hampshire. Full story

Wrestling Team Pins Opponents to the Mat

Despite an overall record of 9-6, Messiah wrestling has found success on the mat both individually and as a team. Messiah started the season off strong by winning the Messiah Invitational over seven other schools. A week later the team traveled to Rhode Island for the Roger Williams Invitational and came in 2nd out of 11 teams. Full story

Students get ready for the annual Eyas Bombardment Tournament

The Student Alumni Council, Eyas, will bring the dodgeball-like game of Bombardment to campus this Wednesday night for a class-vs.-class tournament. With no limit to participating players, each class is hoping for a good turnout for their chances to win the championship t-shirt and year-long bragging rights. Full story

Boyer Hall Elevator Out of Service

Cylinder failure puts elevator out of service until February 6th

Before break, Messiah students discovered a note on the elevator near the entrance to Boyer which read: "Elevator is out of service. Maintenance has been notified."  Although Facility Services is aware of the problem, they admit it will be difficult to repair. Students and staff received an email apologizing for the inconvenience. In it, Faculty Services explained that the elevator had a cylinder failure. In order to understand why it will be difficult to repair the elevator, one must first understand the mechanics of an elevator cylinder. Full story

Monotonous but Necessary

Routines: Monotonous but Necessary

January is a return to all things routine. It's a time to get "back into the swing of things," "back to the grind" and "back to the routine." None of those phrases have especially positive connotations associated with them. It is important to remember, however, that routine plays a very important role for all people, especially students.  Routine, in my view, has two redeeming qualities. Full story

Directed by George Clooney, The Ides of March was adapted from the script of Farragut North. The main character, Stephen Meyers, is the campaign manager for Mike Morris, the governor of Ohio who is trying to become president. Meyers experiences the many intricacies of politics, as well as learns about Morris' secrets that could end his run for presidency. Full story

Summer Jobs+: Positive Sign For American Youth Employment?

Federal government and private sector to provide jobs for disadvantaged and disconnected Americans

The White House recently announced a joint initiative with business and non-profit organizations to make use of the "untapped potential" that disconnected and low-income youth offer America.  According to www.whitehouse.gov, the initiative, termed "Summer Jobs+," aims to provide approximately 250,000 summer employment opportunities. Government Information Censorship Bills?

On the 18th of January, Wikipedia and hundreds of other internet sites shut down their services for 24 hours in protest of two bills named PIPA and SOPA, referred to as the Online Piracy Acts.  These bills were created in order to combat "intellectual property" theft which would mainly be directed at piracy sites such as the Pirate Bay.  Like the usual Washington legislation, the bills were of good intention, but the cause and effects of such a bill were totally ignored. Messiah College students and alumnus help run Representative Stephen Bloom’s campaign

On Tuesday January 3, Representative Stephen Bloom announced his campaign for re-election to the State House of Representatives for Pennsylvania's 199th District. Two Messiah College students, Derek Petrella '12 and Phil Strunk '14, as well as recent graduate Evan Pittsley '11, are a part of Bloom's campaign team.  Petrella and Pittsley are Bloom's campaign managers, while Strunk is Bloom's field director.
